What To Avoid For Your Online Dating Profile

December 30, 2017

It's a time for a new year, a new self-image, a new date. If you're New Year's resolution is to take that first step in the online dating world, then congratulations! Give yourself the best chances by being prepared. In the spirit of all things new and dating, here are some helpful ways to avoid the mistake of having a bad dating profile.

Don't design your profile for the wrong online dating platform.

This is one of the biggest offenders for why your profile may not be getting the kind of results you want. If you're looking for a lifelong commitment, don't use Tinder. If you're looking for a hookup, don't use eHarmony. Tailor your profile to fit the demographic of that platform and what you're looking for.

Don't unknowingly chase potential dates away with your profile picture.

Bathroom selfies are not as attractive as you may think but don't go posting group shots with your girls at the bar or a 5-year-old photo of yourself. Instead, try to include something that interests you in your photo, like drinking a glass of wine at a nice restaurant or hiking in the woods. Show your personality in the photo, not just your face.

Don't let your description give you an unattractive impression.

This is a very important rule in any dating scenario: Be self-aware. You don't want your potential dates to think you're arrogant, high maintenance, or uninteresting. Have a trusted friend or relative objectively review your profile and see just what kind of image you're presenting of yourself.

Don't include details that make you like everyone else.

Your competition is probably posting yoga pics, showing off the places she's traveled, and showing bar bathroom body shots. While you may be into those things as well, you want to stand out to potential dates. Show a side of yourself that you may not normally show, step out of your comfort zone and put a piece of the real you out there so you can get more connections.

Online dating platforms can be brutally honest with the sense of anonymity and ability to swipe right. If you project the right kind of image for yourself though, you stand the best chances of getting the right kind of attention and starting the new year off right!
